Jobs report: NBC

As election day is almost near, I would like to revisit the jobs report in 2020 and now. NBC released a jobs report November 1st referencing the mere 12,000 new jobs. That is a terrible report, but they're is a reason why. "The United States added just 12,000 jobs last month, a figure economists say was impacted by two hurricanes and a strike. Yet, even with those caveats, the report pointed to a cooling labor market." (Wile, 2024). A hurricane and labor strike are to blame for 12,000 new jobs. That is very interesting because Trump's numbers in 2020 were 661,000 new jobs and it was a disaster for him. "It’s a “steady flood of job loss,” said Bill Spriggs, an economist for the AFL-CIO labor union. “The next six months… look pretty bad because what happened in August with people using so much credit is they’re going to be reticent to spend money by Christmas. We won’t have enough jobs back by November" (Popken, 2024). In NBC's defense the pandemic was of course aiding the influx of new jobs, but it does not explain the lack of urgency for the Biden job market closing at 12,000 before election day. Trump lost jobs in his term, but this is because of a worldwide pandemic. The hurricane, and a devastating one at that, affected the east coast at best, so why a shortage in the job market? Comparing a pandemic to a labor strike is apples to oranges. The Trump administration also had devastating hurricanes in 2020. There were 30 named storms in 2020 and it set a record dating back to the 1870s. "The total estimated cost for reported damages as a result of 2020's hurricane season was about 40.3 Billion Fact: A few of the costliest 2020 hurricanes were Hurricane Laura and Hurricane Delta, which caused a combined $20 billion in damage." (FEMA, 2020). All this to say that the job market needs to increase in production, while still holding both men accountable for their own strains on the economy.
