Debate week: How has the coverage been for each candidate?

It is the first debate between Harris and Trump for the 2024 election. Harris has been the candidate for about a month and some change, while Trump has been the expected nominee since before the primary. ABC will be hosting this debate and some interesting research has been conducted on how they treat Harris V Trump. "A new study by the Media Research Center finds that, of the Big Three evening newscasts, ABC’s World News Tonight — run by debate moderator David Muir — has been the most positive towards Harris and the most hostile to Trump" (Noyes). This research comes out 2 days before the debate. David Muir, who hosts the nightly news on ABC will host this debate. His coverage included 25 clearly positive statements for Harris and her campaign, while Trump received 5 clearly positive comments and 66 negative. That is a 100% positivity rate for Harris and a 7% positivity rate for Trump. This does not include no negativity, however, just not from the media mouths of ABC. "So while viewers of ABC’s World News Tonight certainly heard negative comments about Harris during these past six-and-a-half weeks, all of them were from Trump, his campaign team, or other Republicans — never from reporters or nonpartisan sources." (Noyes). This is not just ABC, but as well as, NBC and CBS nightly news. NBC had a 71% positivity rate for Harris and CBS had a 91% positivity rate. Trumps respected numbers included,  a 77% negative reporting from CBS and a 86% negative reporting from NBC. ABC's coverage is as follows, Never labeled Harris as a liberal, Never had an opposing voter voice their opinion about Harris, and never highlighted Harris's controversies, like her husbands marital affair with the nanny. All of this is very interesting and it will be a spectacle to behold on Tuesday to see the treatment of both candidates.

  1. I really liked how you covered the positive and negative reporting of each of the presidential candidates prior to the debate. It is not surprising that ABC would be more favorable of Vice President Harris, however I was taken aback that she has had a 100% positive rate of coverage compared to Trump's 93% negative coverage. These statistics really make me wonder about the validity of the debates considering how lopsided and biased the questions being asked by ABC might be based off of the statistics provided above. This goes for both sides of the political spectrum, I do not believe that it is right to have the mediators be so opinionated about each candidate. I think that there should be neutral mediators with at least no public stances on either candidate so there can be any bias eliminated. Overall this was a great blog and very informative,I will be following Your blog through the semester to see what research you end up doing during this election season's media coverage.

  2. Hi Will! I am really glad you chose this topic to cover in your blog, because it is so important to notice what went on in the debate as far as the mediators questions. First and foremost, no matter what one's political affiliation is, the way the two mediators spoke to Harris versus Trump was sickening and a total deviation from our democracy. I have done my own research on what took place and there are even people suspecting that Linsey Davis was one of Kamala Harris' sorority sisters in college. Furthermore, these statistics clearly show how the left wing newscast favored covering Harris. It is also interesting to compare the news outlets in this class, then getting to watch the debate and see the biased comments/questions actually take place. Did you watch the debate and notice things that we have written about in discussion boards? Learning these lessons has made me so much more aware of what is happening in the media that I have never even realized before this class. I am excited to read more of your blog!
