FBI distrust
Since 2016, the FBI has been under intense scrutiny following the lack of findings in the Russian collusion claim. The Trump 2016 presidential campaign was one of the wildest underdog stories in modern politics. Trump not only wasn't a politician, but he also was running against one of the biggest ones at the time. Although, Clinton wasn't well liked, she still had tons of experience in the federal government. Through it all he still ended up winning, but not without consequence and claims of collusion. Trump was slapped with a big cheating scandal that shadowed him for two years. Durham said the FBI should have never launched an investigation into alleged Russian collusion with Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign, given the slim evidence. That is a huge win for Trump, who has for years called out his unfair treatment by the FBI – and a media all too willing to find blame in the former president’s actions. The investigation into the "collusion" clouded Trump’s entire presidency, and Democrats harnessed the tale to paint Trump as an illegitimate president. (Jacques, 2023). The FBI through all of this brought themselves into some hot water politically. They went off slim evidence that was disproven in the end and it cost them publicly. The FBI has lost the trust of the American people, more specifically those who consider themselves republicans. The McCourtney Institute for Democracy’s most recent Mood of the Nation Poll, conducted November 14-18, 2022, finds that a much higher proportion of Democrats than Republicans say that they trust the Federal Bureau of Investigation and that they believe FBI agents are fair. (Helmstetter, 2023). Now, the FBI isn't the only institution that has lost the trust of the American people, but it is one of the biggest ones. The media didn't help their cause either because they also pedaled the Russian collusion lie right on their airwaves. As Durham details, the FBI fumbled the “collusion” investigation. But mainstream media outlets also deserve blame for breathlessly going along with the Trump-Russia allegations. (Jacques, 2023).
