Cat 5 political hurricane
Politico posted a article yesterday titled "Trump drags hurricane Helene into 2024 campaign". Trump was speaking at one of his rally's when he noted that neither Biden or Harris had been to the disaster sight in either North Carolina, Georgia, or Florida. Biden, instead is at his beach house, which would be a story but it is nothing new for the current president. How is it that Trump is at fault for bringing up disaster relief efforts, when that is all Politico did. In a 2017 piece titled "Is Trump's response to Hurricane Harvey enough" it seems like it is ok to attack a candidate based on relief efforts. They even commented on some of his attributes, seemingly to be negative. "The White House released photos Sunday showing Trump, with a trademark tough-guy look and a white USA hat, at a conference table at the Camp David retreat leading a teleconference of his senior staff on how to handle Hurricane Harvey, which the National Weather Service has described as “unprecedented.”" (Politico, 2017). Imagine if Trump had been on a beach instead of on the ground on sight? I mean he can't even do anything right when he is there. A Politico article following Biden's response is much different. Hurricane Ian hit in 2022 in Florida and Biden restored trust in the Government! "Restoring trust in government and its institutions has long been a pillar of the Biden’s agenda, and was a focal point of his campaign for president as he challenged Donald Trump in 2020." (Politico, 2022). It is an interesting comparison in how both were treated during natural disasters. Lastly, Politico posted a new article deeming Trump the reason we have hurricanes? In light of Helene Politico thought it would be a great time, not to question Biden's efforts in relief, but attack Trump on climate. Despite that Trump has not had power in close to four years and this is happening under Biden. In politico's defense they did add this quote at the very end of the article "Still, not all of the activist community is pinning their hopes on a Harris win, particularly those unhappy about the fact that the U.S. has grown to be the world’s largest producer of oil and gas — the very thing driving up global temperatures" (Politico, 2024). Politico has been unfair and I could have gone on with their reporting on Trump. Politico has yet to post a piece regarding Biden and Helene at the time of this blog.

This is a very enlightening article that really highlights the different ways the media chooses to cover politicians depending on their political affiliation. Comparing two articles about each President is a very good way to demonstrate how politico approaches both Biden and Trump. You may just wanna be careful about putting too much bias towards any side with statements like "Imagine if Trump had been on a beach instead of on the ground on sight? I mean he can't even do anything right when he is there." as that is one of the criteria for this projects grade. Overall very insightful post!
ReplyDeleteHi William! This is a great post that discusses how Politico has been unfair in their treatment of the political parties while reporting the hurricane. It seems that Trump is always the headline for these media outlets and their stories. I strongly believe this is because they know his name is the only one that can get them the views and money that they desire. It is actually sickening how the media will twist things and speak on each candidate so differently (with obvious remarks of who they support). The part where you wrote about Politico saying Trump is the reason we have hurricanes made me giggle, because that just makes no sense. I think no matter what side anyone is on, we should never be ok with the kind of partisan divide the media continues to exacerbate. It is a direct violation of our democracy and I believe above all else... that is the largest problem we face today.
